The greatest wealth is health
The Beskid 5 is a place where recovery to health takes shorter time, while the mind and the body are easily cleared of stress. One of the Beskid 5 municipalities – the town of Ustroń – is listed among the most recognised Polish health resorts, with over 200 years of tradition and salt springs, considered to be the best countrywide.
It may be seen as a paradox that medicinal stays in Ustroń originate from its industrial tradition – at the end of the 18th century the iron works workers noticed that the water heated by slag from the blast furnace alleviates rheumatic pain; thus, a special bath house, meant for baths prepared in this way, was constructed in Ustroń. In 1804, the Medicinal Hotel was built, as well as a walking hall and a sheep whey drinking house. Sadly, the metallurgic industry was doomed to slow collapse – as the locally explored ores were of poor quality, and the railway line Bohumin-Košice had been launched, it was Třinec which became a more significant centre of metallurgic industry. In 1897, the big blast furnace was extinguished, thus putting an end to “slag baths.” Luckily, the health resort value of Ustroń was kept due to the 1883 discovery of a ferrous water spring in the valley of Gościeradowiec and the discovery of peloid 15 years later. The National Government in Opava certified Ustroń as an Austrian health resort; after World War II, in 1967, the town was granted health resort rights. In 1970s, characteristic “pyramids” were erected in Ustroń-Zawodzie; it was also the time when the Silesian Rheumatological Hospital and The Health Centre Institute of Natural Medicine were built. These days, the most patients benefiting from health resort treatment and rehabilitation offered by the health resorts of Ustroń are patients suffering from orthopedic-traumatic diseases, rheumatic diseases, nervous system diseases, pulmonary or heart diseases.
